Chapter Twenty-One

Jacob

I leave Talin in the dark corner that we have sufficiently renamed our alcove and head to the bar to grab a couple of drinks. What was supposed to be a fun night away from the drama at work had already turned into a night of hell.

As much as Talin claims not to have had anything to do with Raul, I can sense the lie in his distress. As a man who has spent his life lying to everyone around, I know a thing or two about reading a person.

“Two bourbons, please.” The man at the bar is the same one who waited on us last time. He watches the crowd as he pulls two clear glasses from the shelf above his head and uncorks the bottle of bourbon. I watch him watching the room.

He passes the filled glasses to me and takes the twenty I pass him. “Keep the change.” He nods and looks past me toward the area I left Talin in.

“He’s a good one,” the bartender offers, and I look over my shoulder to find Talin staring at the table, his head in his hands, his elbows on his knees. “That other one, not so much.”

“The guy from earlier?” I ask. He nods his head, and I have no doubt he saw the entire exchange even if he couldn’t hear what was being said.

“Yeah. I’m starting to gather that,” I say and walk back to Talin. Seeing him distraught makes my heart hurt. It’s like a slow tear in the center of my chest. Every time I see him upset, another piece of my heart gets ripped away. I don’t like knowing the reason for his current pain is me. It makes me want to find the nearest toilet and hurl my guts.

I set the glasses of alcohol on the table and crouch down beside him on the couch taking his hand and pulling it free from his face. I turn his head with my large palm and leave it there pressed against the side of his face. When his eyes meet mine, I lower my lips to his slow and gentle.

He relaxes into me, and my tongue slips past the barrier of his lips searching for his own. They meet in a dance as old as time. I pull him closer wanting to feel his body against mine. Wanting to know he is mine. Only mine.

“Jake…” Talin mumbles against my lips breaking the kiss and my eternal struggle for control. I pull back pressing my lips to his one more time and then shift in my seat. Talin grabs a glass and takes a healthy sip before passing my glass to me.

“I just need the truth, Talin. I don’t care how bad it is. I can deal with anything as long as it’s the truth.” He examines my expression. I try to convey the truth of my words with a single look, not knowing if I succeed or fail until he begins his story, and then I grip my glass reminding myself to remain calm and hear him all the way out.
